Old subaru worth looking at? (2003 Impreza 2.5 TS)

Message par jtsaip »

Hey guys,

I found an old 2003 Impreza 2.5 TS at a used car lot. Words from the dealer himself: "It's not the best car in the world". The asking price is $1000, and there's some visible rust on the car and apparently a cracked windshield. I have not went and looked at the car itself yet.

With the car being this cheap, would it even be worth the time to go see it? Would it be worth bringing a car inspector?

I really like the look of the "bug-eyed" imprezas, which is why I'm even considering this vehicle at all.

Thanks!

15yo Subaru, born and raised in Quebec WILL be submerged in rust (unless the car was extremely pampered its whole life - which wouldn't result in a 1k$ asking price).

That being said, rust aside, it would highly depend on the milleage..
This engine is commonly known for driving belt and water pump issues so please look for proof that they were changed at 100k intervals.

I personally have a 2003 Outback with around 177k on the clock (not same engine as your TS) and it is due for so many repairs that the ROI is simply not there, resulting in -> I will drive till it dies (mostly somewhere this year). I know it's not the same engine but the end-result is most likely the same, the asking price is low because the car is most likely end-of-life and due for so much repair that current owner is trying to make a buck before car dies.
On the other hand it *could* be a deal... but those a rare..

So to answer your question: It is worth time to go see it if:
-Owner can prove timming belt / water pump were changed at 100k interval
-Milleage is reasonable
-Prove that car actually works.
...then its a judgement call

FYI I doubt the vendor will even approve an inspection

but you have to keep in mind that its a 1000 $ car, have probably some issues here and here but if you have some mecanical skills, it can be a good bargin!

on the other side, if you don't do any repairs by yourself, it can be a real money pit really fast

if its a wagon, rust can be deadly on rear shock towers
